Utah Medical’s Nutri-Cath® is a nasogastric, orogastric or nasojejunal catheter designed for enteral feeding in the neonatal or pediatric intensive care setting.
Nutri-Cath® can indwell for up to 30 days, though many clinicians also prefer Nutri-Cath’s gentle biocompatible silicone material for short term or intermittent feedings because it resists irritation and problems with hyperactive gag reflex. Silicone has been touted as the ideal developmentally friendly material for neonates and Nutri-Cath® is available in a variety of non-stiffening, non-clogging, silicone configurations.
For those seeking the clinical benefits of faster flow rates and ease of placement, Nutri-Cath® is also available in a DEHP-free polyurethane material.
PATIENT COMFORT: Soft, biocompatible silicone does not irritate or scratch nares like stiffer materials. Because Nutri-Cath® can be left in for up to 30 days, it avoids multiple repeat placements which lead to oral aversion and hyperactive gag reflex.
SAFE, EFFECTIVE DELIVERY: Maleable distal opening and two distal side holes (see image right) allow the thickest solutions to flow through the catheter at a gentle pace, while avoiding tissue damage, clogging or adhering to stomach lining during feeding and sampling.
VERSATILITY: 3.5Fr to 8.5Fr sizes, and silicone or polyurethane materials accomodate both tiny NICU patients and more developed pediatric patients. In addition, catheters are available in 40cm, 58cm and 93cm lengths to allow for nasogastric or nasojejunal placement.
AVOIDING COMPLICATIONS: Nutri-Cath® is available in a standard hub width, or locking oral hub. This Nutri-Lok® hub is one of several components of the Nutri-Lok® Eneteral Feeding System that satisfies JCAHO tubing connection safety recommendations. Minimizing the learning curve during a change in practice will greatly decrease the risk of complications, and reduce labor and device costs to the hospital. Using a locking system may also increase clinician confidence that connections will remain secure when unattended. The Nutri-Cath® oral hub is designed with proprietary inserts to prevent infusion from a standard connection (e.g. IV tubing or the male tip of a standard syringe). When a clinician accidentally attempts to connect a standard connection to the oral hub, solutions will leak out of the hub instead of infusing. This additional safety mechanism has been highly effective as a training tool in using the correct oral devices.
PLACEMENT: Barium sulfate-loaded catheter is highly visible under x-ray for easy verification of tip placement. Depth markings at every centimeter ensure accurate placement and verification.
COST EFFECTIVE: Nutri-Cath’s clinical and safety advantages deliver the lowest total cost of care when utilization, clinician labor and risk of preventable complications are considered
